Alumni/ae
Spotlight
Ed Lovern (MHA '92)
If
you didn't get to read the cover story from Modern
Healthcare's January 29, 2001 issue - and even if you did
- take a look. The author, Ed Lovern, is an alumnus of the Department
of Health Administration, MHA Class of 1992. His position as
a reporter for Modern Healthcare may not be typical of many
MHA alumni/ae, but Ed feels it is the perfect opportunity for
him to be in the healthcare industry at a broad level and utilize
his love and talent for journalism.
Before
joining Modern Healthcare,
Ed was with Borgess Health Alliance, Kalamazoo, Michigan, for approximately
nine years. He completed his residency with Borgess in 1991-1992,
which was followed by a one-year fellowship. His first official
position was in strategic planning with Borgess' internal consulting
unit. Ed was then promoted to Vice President for Public Relations
and Community Benefit Planning and then to Executive Director for
Integration Services. The next natural step with Borgess was a promotion
to hospital administrator, but Ed decided to take a different path,
and in the summer of 2000, made the change.
From
Modern Healthcare's
Chicago office, Ed has covered issues related to quality, outcomes,
and human resources (please visit links below for samples of Ed's
writing). In the near future, he and his family will move to Washington,
DC where he will cover Medicare, Medicaid, and other Federal healthcare
issues. Ed will also be responsible for covering healthcare happenings
in Virginia and Maryland.
Ed
is very pleased with his career choice. Working for Modern Healthcare
has allowed him to stay in health care, but also do what he enjoys
the most - writing. As a reporter, he can talk to anyone in the
country about health care topics and then know that health care
executives across the nation are reading his articles and responding.
His position has also given him multiple opportunities to run into
colleagues and alumni/ae and faculty of the Department. According
to Ed, these connections have been most beneficial.
Congratulations
to Ed, and we look forward to seeing you on the front page again
in the near future!
