J. Thomas Ryan, M.D., (MSHA '99)
MediCorp Health System

Dr. J. Thomas Ryan currently serves as the Executive Vice
President of Medical Affairs for the Medicorp Health System
(MHS) based in Fredericksburg, VA, and has been in the
position since August 1998.  MHS is an integrated, not-for-profit,
$500 million system with 412 acute care beds, 190 long term
care beds, a free-standing ambulatory surgery center, a
free-standing psychiatric hospital, and a home health agency. 

As EVP for Medical Affairs, Dr. Ryan’s primary responsibilities
include:  Quality Management, Care Management, Patient Safety,
clinical liaison for employed physicians, medical staff issues,
and strategic planning for a rapidly growing health system.

As a senior healthcare leader, Dr. Ryan has a combination of
primary care practice and executive leadership experience at
the physician group practice, medical staff, board, and health
system levels.  While at MHS, Dr. Ryan led successful efforts
to develop a primary care IPA and a PHO.  He has also consistentlyprovided physician/executive leadership in collaboratively redesigning the Care Management System, and developing Quality Management and Patient Safety Programs.

Prior to his role as EVP of Medical Affairs, Dr. Ryan spent four
years serving as the chairperson of Integrated Health Systems
Strategies, a coalition of physicians and MHS that worked
collaboratively to develop an evolving managed care strategy. 
From 1989 through 1990, he served two terms as the President
of the Mary Washington Medical Staff where he helped in the
strategic planning of an $80 million replacement hospital. 
Beforehand, Dr. Ryan served as President of Pratt Medical Center. 

Throughout his very successful career, Dr. Ryan has simultaneously served as Medical Director of Mary Washington Hospital Home Health Agency, from 1983-2005, as well as continuing to serve as a private practice physician.

Dr. Ryan is also very active in his community; he has spent multiple terms as Director of the Board for the Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania Regional Chamber of Commerce (VA).  Other community affiliations include:  10 years as an advisor for the Medical College of Virginia Dean of School of Medicine, three years as a Member-at-large for the Department of Health Administration Alumni/ae Association Executive Committee, past Director of the Rappahannock United Way,
Chair VHA-CA Performance Improvement Committee, and is currently a member of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Dr. Ryan attended Virginia Tech for his undergraduate degree then moved on to receive his M.D. from VCU-MCV, a Post-Doctoral Certificate in Medical Management form University of North Carolina, and a Master of Science in Health Administration from VCU.

When he is not hard at work in the health system or in the community Dr. Ryan enjoys spending time with his family.  He has been married to his wife Susan, for 37 years and they are lucky enough to enjoy
two daughters and five small grand children.  He has a passion for wellness, and “walks the talk” by engaging in vigorous physical activity daily.
